 History

In 1823, the United Provinces of Central America was formed by the five Central American states under General Manuel José Arce. When this federation was dissolved in 1839, El Salvador became an independent republic. El Salvador's early history as an independent state was marked by frequent revolutions. (2)  Shortly after General Romero’s ouster, the country was plunged into a civil war that would last for the next 12 years (1980 - 1992). There were other significant consequences to be noted. Most obvious was the military’s loss of the monopoly it had held on the direct exercise of governmental authority for nearly 50 years. (3)

On January 13, 2001, El Salvador was ravaged by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 on the Richter Scale, located at longitude 88°46’W and latitude 12°52’N. The epicenter was located off the Pacific Coast of El Salvador.
